Like poetry, fashion does not state anything. It merely suggests.
Karl Lagerfeld, 2010

Here's our pick from deep within the ocean of online boutiques. E-Robe offers a super stylish and incredibly chic selection of Australian and international designers including Alice McCall, Ksubi, Lisa Ho, Manning Cartell, Third Millenium, Jayson Brundston, Cooper by Trelise, Willow,  Nathan Smith, Christian Lacroix, Givenchy, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Nicola Finetti, Tristan Blair and Rachel Phillips. Plus, a little Birdy tells us Nicole Richie's highly anticipated Winter Kate is on its way...
REAL LIFE SNAP

This simple snap was captured by my friend Nichola at an Australia Day BBQ. I love the casual nonchalence of her muse. She's unaware of the camera, and equally unaware her picture ended up here.

HERE COMES THE SUN
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun / and I say it's all right / It's all right
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes
[George Harrison for the Beatles]

In my travels, and by that I mean from the comfortable folds of my arm chair, I have noticed a prevailing trend in fashion & design photopgrahy:

Romantic Sunlight.

This is particular to fashion blogs such as Daydream Lily [a favourite] and Fashion Toast [a big gun]. Perhaps I love it because it reminds me of heady and carefree summers, or the fact that sunlight is so critical to our survival. Either way, the blissful nature in which certain photographers capture the sunlight intrigues, inspires and spellbinds me.

Mem'ries
Mem'ries
Light the corners of my mind
Misty water-colored memories
Of the way we were

I decided to take a trip down memory lane, however cliched that may be. Harking back to the 1990s when I first picked up Dolly and became aquainted with Kate. She shocked the world with her waif-like, heroin chic frame. I was entranced with her seemingly 'plain' beauty, those imperfectly spaced teeth, the lack of breasts and thighs that didn't touch. I aspired to look like that, and sadly, for a period of time did. I must say it was the unhappiest year of my life. Strangely enough when I was that thin, I don't remember feeling it. It's only when I look back on photos and see my 43kg self I grimace with shock. Unfortunately in the size zero era, I know girls - and women who still aspire to this. Ask yourself honestly, is it beautiful? I'm a little ashamed at my response.

a little email alerted me to Sydney's Veri boutique today. When I saw the Cavalli, Dolce & Gabbana and Versace images, I yelped. 'Oh my goodness that's freaking hot!', I screamed in the middle of my open plan office. Bear in mind I are not supposed to access blogs, hotmail etc etc etc. Oops. Luckily the CEO, whose office is adjacent my cell - erm, partition, is on annual leave. Lucky. Veri Lucky. You will be too, if you can afford any of the following items. How much, you say? Tut tut. If you have to ask, you clearly can't afford it...

MONKI BUSINESS
www.monkiworld.com

'Close your eyes and let the bubble of thoughts slowly take you to a world, far far away. Drift through the clouds and beyond the horizon. Gently open your eyes and step in to the Monki world.'

If it wasn't for their bizarre, animated lookbook [see snapshot images below], you could almost be forgiven for thinking it was Top Shop. [But we didn't say that].

Progressive high street Swedish label Monki, is a self proclaimed 'way of life and doing fashion'. As a store concept and fashion brand, Monki
designs represent independence and an 'alternative that's full of dreams'.

Certainly that's not all Monki represents. Armed with an impressive commitment to the environment, sustainability and social justice, Monki have taken a stance against animal cruelty and do not use fur or down, and carefully monitor their sources of merino wool.

Ethics aside, Monki is incredibly on trend and surprisingly well priced. We can only hope Monki becomes available 'down under' in 2010.

Monki is available in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Germany. For a list of stockists, click here.

MERCEDES-BENZ FASHION WEEK
AW10BERLIN
[jan 20 - 23]

This is not our image. Whose image is it?
www.mercedes-benzfashionweek.com

Well folks, it's that time of year again. Fashion week starts in a flurry all over the world, commencing with our favourite, Berlin.

[Why?]

Apart from the fact I sat front row [well, almost] six months ago, MB Fashion Week Berlin pulls an an incredible array of both mainstream and ecclectic designers from around Europe. To be held at the chic Bebel Platz, we're especially looking forward to the collections of Little Shilpa, Arrondisment aq1, IC! Berlin, Kilian Kerner, Lena Hoschek, Green Showroom, Je Suis Belle, Michael Sontag, Mongrels in Common and Sam Frenzel (last year's Designer for Tomorrow).

One can get lost in Berlin. Four times the size of Paris, you can troll for weeks, if not months, independent design and vintage boutiques and sipping what is arguably the best cappuchino outside Melbourne. That's not to mention the culture, art and nightlife.

Comprised of 23 districts, our faves are Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, Kreuzberg, Charlottenburg and Friedrichshain.

TO RIVAL ALEXANDER MCQUEEN'S 2009 PLATO HOOF?

Not since McQueen's amphibian Plato models tottered down the runway, has the world seen such unique and innovative conceptions in footwear design. Brazilian designer Andreia Chaves created the "Invitisble Shoe" from muti-faceted mirror coating, and is designed to blend in to the surrounding environment.

One question, I wonder, 'would I have the guts to wear these down Melbourne's Chapel Street?'

Hmm, let us continue that muse.

NO LABEL? IT'S VINTAGE. donc, qu'est-ce que j'en ai à faire?

I first lived in Paris when I was 23. Arriving in the depths of winter, the beauty and seduction of the city  was entrenched in every 'rue', in every cafe au lait, in every rickety elevator, in every carb laden baguette. Paris defined a part of my self concept, and I never forgot it.

Imagine my elation when I finally returned eight years later. It was mid July, and the height of summer. As I caught sight of the Eiffel Tower, I smiled broadly. Then the plane landed, and I was back.

But oh, it was hot. Very hot. The city looked as I remembered, but somehow felt anything but. As I walked down the Champs Elysees, in the oppressive humidity, I suddenly realised English was being spoken all around me. The locals had flown South for the summer - and so too had the culture and romance, it seemed. This new Paris was an unattractive melting pot of tourists, beggars and gypies.  Never mind that I was technically a tourist. As a past resident, I felt smugly excluded from those squealing in delight at the Arc de Triomphe.

I was probably in shock, as I realised my favourite city was quickly becoming my least. And so, I scurried in to the Marais. Thankfully I found a reason to continue loving Paris.

Fripe.

A vast gold mine of high quality and very cheap "fripe" suddenly became mine for the taking - if only I had the euros and the luggage space to oblige. Very sadly, my budget and over stuffed backpack allowed a small handful of purchases. A beautiful kidney shaped handbag in black eighties leather became mine, as did a thin studded belt of the same colour, and a delightful floral cotton shift dress. (That came in handy in the southern italian heat).

Rue des Rosiers, 75004 Paris

Now Paris' exceptional vintage offering is not confined to the Marais. Though for a truly authentic cultural experience, no matter the season, its recommended to start (and finish) here.

Vintage Desir, at 32 Rue des Rosiers is perhaps the best place to start sifting. A poky piece of heaven, the selection is varied, cool - and super budget friendly. No labels here, but seeing no name vintage is the is the new 'It' label, qu'est-ce que j'en ai à faire?

Admittedly + very regrettably, HBTN sat in the back seat of the very fast lane in twenty - oh nine. But, it's a new year, new decade, and I've decided to breathe life back in to my beautiful blog.

You will notice many changes in twenty ten > in particular an eco + sustainability flavour. Of course, we will continue to profile fabulous fashion, but it's time to get unstuck from the sand - we can all do more for our precious planet, even if it means spending more on an organic cotton t-shirt as opposed to the cheap(er) one at a fast fashion store.

In twenty ten, you will also see my writing in print, as I contribute to Australia's first eco fashion mag, Peppermint, www.peppermintmag.com You'll also see me online at www.indie.com.au and www.stylesamplemagazine.com

To ring in the new year, I wanted to tell you about the wonderful Lullie Vintage sale

peruse a smattering of the incredible selection, below:

Remember the 1990s? when floral and grunge reigned supreme? This chic button down dress takes me right back to kurt cobain, doc martens, slap bands and scrunchies (although yes, the latter the late 80s).

BUY IT HERE $US 39.99

Ok, so the seventies were slightly before my time (no wait, a tell a little lie). Adorn this chic boho mini tent dress and laze away the endless Australian summer by the pool....dancing at music festivals, eating ice cream from Trampoline...

BUY IT HERE US $ 29.99

US $80.99 is such a small amount to exchnage for an incredibly classic, but delightfully sexy 60s noir mini. Audrey Hepburn meets twenty ten style.

this week, we're

ANTI FASHION
vanessa laraine

Give the finger to haute couture and high street and find your own style, make a statement.

This week, HBTN was inspired by a heady dose of Anti Fashion, thanks to Uk indie mag Dazed and Confused. Based in Australia, we're two months behind the eight ball, and are still devouring the October Issue. Fiercely raw and independent, we loved D&C's stories on Franken Fashion "It's not easy being green" (can you imagine slathering your body in green paint then walking down Chapel Street, Melbourne? We think not, but would be fun to try), "Freak Out", the new wave of Psychedelic Art that's taking You Tube by a storm.

LAST RESORT

Resort wear in 2010 is delightfully colourful and exquisitely pretty. A fabulous mélange of femininity, resulting in spectacular pallets of fruity florals and abstract prints.

CLASS ACT

There is perhaps none so exquisite, so supremely feminine, nor so stylish and enchanting than a prima ballerina.

Little wonder then, designers have oft taken inspiration from the stage and embedded it deep within the folds of their best haute couture and pret a porter creations.

YOU'RE BOOTIFUL ....

Vanessa Laraine

I once had a little dog, we called her booty. Which was actually short for bootiful, because articulating beautiful was far too difficult. She also got Wish as a derivative of Aloysius, but that's another story altogether.

Booty was the most bootiful white ball of fluff we'd ever seen. Her EQ was through the roof, too - hell, she'd lick my tears away during Year 11
(gross, but cute) when the 'it' girl found out her crush liked me better. (Needless to say, I was black banned from the bootiful crowd).

Getting back to the subject, I love winter, especially when it involves bootiful clothing....and boots. Which is why we know you'll love My Theresa and their fabulous selection of ankle biters.

Sure, you'll pay through the nose, but every fashionista knows a price can't be placed on Balmain, Yves Saint Laurent or Chloe.

HBTN STYLE TURNS 1

It's hard to believe a year has passed since we turned the laptop on. What made us think we could compete in the competitive world of fashion blogging? Alot, apparently. In twelve months, we've attended L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival, Rosemount Australia Fashion Week, Mercedez Benz Fashion Week, Berlin and received invites to Paris, Barcelona and Amsterdam fashion weeks (ran out of $$ traversing Europe, so next year).

Join in the celebration and snare this free badge for your fashion blog.

THE FASHION WEEK CHRONICLES l TRAVEL MUSINGS

Vanessa Laraine

Unfortunately international sojourns can't last forever, although part of me wishes they would.

After traversing Europe - the whole shabang, mind you, west and east, I've got some surprising news to tell. Parisian women are not that posh. Some Italian women are impossibly beautiful, their style inimitable, but the majority are, well, normal! London ladies are not that luxurious, and Barcelonain women may have brilliant tans, but that's about all.

Australian women however, are amongst the most stylish in the world (yay!). And our design talent is significantly world class. That's why I thought it fitting to take you on a silent photgraphic journey of RAFW2009.

Yes I'm behind the eight ball, I'm aware that last season is sooooo passe. But I've been living out of a back pack baby, and haven't worn heels or mascara for 12 weeks. And you know what? I've decided that I don't really need either.........

Sit back, and enjoy the photographic beauty of what was backstage and front row (we wish) at RAFW earlier this year.

Cheers

WEIGHTING FOR THE PERFECT BODY

Kelly McNeill

With the increasing warm weather we are all feeling the excitement of the upcoming summer. As such, the desire to drop the winter weight and embrace our skinny selves is very compelling. Models and glamour girls are pasted over every magazine and newspaper we pick up - most especially after the recent Brownlow medal (international readers, this is a second rate Australian red carpet event where the women actually think the world cares - see here).

However, it is important that weight loss is undertaken responsibly - and slowly.  If you really want to drop a few kilos, you've got our support, but don't do it just to conform to a perceived ideal.

We are all different and beautiful in our own way.

Too many of us feel pegged into a particular corner and believe we have to look a certain way.  You can't go on the internet without weight loss adverts - 'loose 5lbs instantly!' or 'radical new weight loss herb, Oprah approved!' One well known British fashion site has a weight and calorie intake calculator to assist you in achieving the perfect bod. HBTN Style hates this! If you do want to lose weight, you have our full support, but make sure you do it for the right reasons.  Don't 'diet' for your friends or your boyfriend, do it for you.

HBTN Style tips to a successful and slimmer you

1.  Don't diet - they don't work.  You need to be prepared to make a long-term change.  This doesn't mean doing away with chocolate or wine forever, just moderate your intake.

2. Introduce more activity into your daily life.  So many of us automatically head for the lift and completely disregard the idea of taking the stairs.  Little extras like this, or even walking to the train instead of driving, can help keep our heart rates up.

3. Do away with negative thoughts. This is perhaps the most important. Stop looking in the mirror and comparing yourself to others.  Accept your body and your differences and work towards a goal that makes YOU happy.

4. Take it slow. You gained extra weight slowly, so don't  expect dramatic changes instantly.  Shows such as the Biggest Loser give unrealistic expectations and encourage people to believe that not only can they lose 4 kilos a week, that this is actually healthy! This level of weight loss is rare, and typically occurs in obese people.  Realistically, you can expect to lose 0.5- 1kg a week. This is a great achievement!

5. Fifth and finally, we recommend - don't weigh yourself. Yes, that's right, when you're loosing weight, try not to step on those scales, or at least, not too frequently (say once every two weeks). The scales are just a number after all. Use your favourite pair of skinny jeans as a yard stick. Once they're loose - reward yourself. With a new pair!
